Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
