European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
