Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
