The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a major honors show approaches, one notices a clamor to include fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
